New Add-ons for PC Study Bible

Users of PC Study Bible from BibleSoft will surely welcome two new additions to the growing library of available works: the 3-Volume New Testament Dictionary Collection, which includes some of IVP's best selling and most renowned dictionaries (Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, and Dictionary of the Later New Testament & Its Developments), and Kittel's landmark reference work Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (unabridged 10 volume set). A lighter, abridged version of TDNT (known as "Little Kittel") is also available. Note that these add-ons only work with version 4.

PC Study Bible 4.2

PC Study Bible has been recently updated to version 4.2. Apart from a streamlined interface, the program now supports global searches, and also includes a pop-up preview feature for Scripture or topical references. Another welcome addition is the ability to save study desktops for later retrieval. See a full listing of what's new here. Given the large amount of titles already available for PC Study Bible, this was a much-needed upgrade.

XML Tanach Updated

The following is from B-Hebrew. Since for some reason I can't link to the archived post, I reproduce it here in its entirety:

The Unicode/XML Tanach from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (WLC) at been substantially upgraded. Please advise of any problems encountered or suggestions.

1. Tanach text can be displayed without associated links by clicking on the book name directly above or below the text. This allows printing of the text and was requested by a student, Luana.

2. The books of the Torah, Genesis.DH.xml ... Deuteronomy.DH.xml, contain Documentary Hypothesis (DH) source markings by default. See the DH link on the index page for more details. The default display does not show these markings, however. Unmarked Torah files, Genesis.xml ... Deuteronomy.xml, continue to be available.

3. The former "About" link has been split into "About", "Installation", and "Technical" links and a general cleanup of the site has been made.

4. A new "Instructions" link has been provided to describe site capabilities.

5. The site now includes an updated and standard version (0.9.3) of the Sarissa XML library. Previous versions contained an earlier and specially-modified version of Sarissa.

Chris Kimball

This is the Torah with DH markings project I have already mentioned before.

New Online Bible Release

The venerable Online Bible for Windows is now at version For a complete list of changes and new features, look here. Two improvements come immediately to mind: the ability to highlight Bible verses and to use the program via a projector. If you are an OLB user, this is an important update you won't want to miss.

Pocket e-Sword 2.5

A new version of Pocket e-Sword is out. Among the various enhancements, the program now supports VGA and landscape modes for devices running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Also, verse notes can include Scripture and Strong's numbers pop-up tips.

It is exciting to see that Bible software for PDAs is really thriving. There are already a significant number of products available, and they keep improving all the time, as handhelds are also able to offer better performance. I'm currently working on more reviews in this area, and am also gathering information for a forthcoming comparison review of the search capabilities of the main software packages currently available for PDAs.

ISA Update

Interlinear Scripture Analyzer (ISA) is currently at version 1.1.0, which includes an Old Testament Hebrew-English Interlinear. There is a new website where you can find out about this free interlinear and concordance search software. I have wanted to review ISA for some time now, but it's still on my looooong to-do list. One interesting thing about it is that it is the only program I know of that displays the text of the Greek NT in uncial characters. I should also point out that there are downloadable PDF files available for the different books of the Bible, in case you want to take a look.

Accordance 6.5 Released

Contributed by guest blogger Ken Ristau

Oak Tree Software has just announced the release of Accordance 6.5 as well as support for the Basilisk II Emulator, which they will start to distribute. The latter seems like a decision coming on the heels of Logos and QuickVerse announcements. I wonder if it is a sign that Oak Tree is thinking about a PC version, though I doubt that.

MacSword 1.2

A new drop of MacSword has been released. It includes a number of interesting enhancements. Two that stand out, in my opinion, are the new and greatly improved search syntax, and the ability to see different Bible versions and/or commentaries in parallel.

UPDATE (21:00 PM): I emailed the developer (Will Thimbleby) and pointed out a few bugs I had found (e.g., Strong's searches didn't work). He fixed the problems and posted a corrected version (1.2a). I plan to update my review of MacSword soon.

Accordance 6.6 Available

Contributed by guest blogger Ken Ristau

Helen Brown of OakTree Software reports:

OakTree Software Inc. announces the release Accordance Version 6.6 with beautiful smooth Quartz drawing of the text and the graphics (in OS X), as well as a few new features. The drawing of the layers on the Atlas is really lovely with true transparency for the regions. The appearance of Greek and Hebrew text is greatly enhanced. This is yet another free upgrade for users with any version of 6. This article illustrates the improvement in appearance of the text and maps.

Accordance 6.7 and Accordance Widget

A new update has just been released. It addresses a number of problems with font and graphic smoothing, and it includes a great new Dashboard widget (for users of Mac OS X 10.4 or higher). This widget can easily retrieve verses from any Bible texts included in Accordance, and can be set to automatically paste it into our favorite word processor. Note, However, that Greek and Hebrew texts can only be pasted into Unicode-aware programs, which means that Word 2004 only accepts English text.

When the Auto Search and Auto Insert options of the widget are checked, any Bible reference will be automatically inserted by simply selecting it, opening the Dashboard (F12) and pressing Return or Intro. Really cool!

Hyper-Concordance Update

Sean Boisen's excellent New Testament Hyper-Concordance (see original blog entry here) has been updated to version 1.2.

This is how he explains some of the enhacements:

  • The new release uses the English Standard Version text, thanks to the generosity of the folks at Crossway Bibles. In my opinion, this is the best contemporary English translation for study purposes, and i'm really happy to be able to offer it here.
  • I've added tabbed navigation to make it easier to find terms of interest, and cleaned up the displays.
  • There's a new feature that displays terms according to their frequency: you can turn it off if you like, but i find it helpful in navigating a long list of terms.

Note that the old version, based on the RSV, can still be found here, but it is not longer being actively developed.
