Updating Website

Now that the hardware part seems to have been taken care of, things will gradually get back to normal (I hope!).

Today we start a new section with interviews with key people from the Bible software industry. I have sent them a survey, and the first replies are already coming in. Ivan Jurik is the first of what will hopefully be a rather long list. More should be posted in the next few days. There is now a handy "What's new" area where all updates will be duly recorded. I'm glad things are taking shape, and would remind you that I am open to your suggestions.

Giuseppe Regalzi, a correspondent from Italy, has brought to my attention that the site doesn't display very well at all at 800 x 600. I promise I will revisit this issue as soon as I can, but for the time being my plate is too full. If there is a real demand for it, I'll do my best to care for those visitors who use lower resolutions. I wouldn't want anyone to miss the opportunity to join us! Meanwhile, I have set the blog to use slightly smaller font sizes. This should help some of you.

Another Interview Posted

Things are developing rather nicely. It's a sunny bright day, and I've just posted an interview with Michael Bushell. I should have at least another one ready tomorrow. It's interesting to see how each individual approaches the same questionnaire in a different way. Hope you'll find this section both informative and enlightening.

Review with Sidenotes

I have posted a review* of a previous version of Accordance Bible Software. A full review of the latest version will be forthcoming. I am making this review available for the following reasons:

1. To whet your appetite ;-)
2. To allow you to compare it with the newer review (coming soon...)
3. To test the sidenotes as recently discussed by Stephen C. Carlson of Hypotyposeis.

Let me know what you think about this annotation technique.

* [Ed.] This link pointed to the previous version available at BSR. The new link, of course, uses a completely different system for displaying notes.

Review of Bibloi 8.0?

Torrey Seland expresses his hope that either me or somebody else will get round to reviewing the latest version of Bibloi (formerly known as Bible Windows) from Silver Mountain Software. I will gladly take up the challenge if/when my upgrade arrives. If my mind serves me right, Bible Windows was the first program of its kind to offer Internet links to different sites of interest for Bible scholars and classicists from inside the application itself. This feature is now becoming available in other software packages. A step in the right direction, as I see it.

[Ed.] The review is now available.

New Interview Posted

Today is John Baima, owner of Silver Mountain Software, who kindly answers our questions about Bible Software. Remember that the flagship of this company is now known as Bibloi.

New Interview

I have just posted a new interview with Bob Pritchett, president of Logos Bible Software. I hope you find this section of the website both informative and estimulating. Incidentally, if you think you should have received a copy of this survey but you haven't yet, or feel you would like to participate, please let me know. I may have overlooked your name by mistake.

In case you want to read a little bit more about him, a 1995 interview is posted here (mirrored in this site), and there is yet another one here about other aspects of his work.

Book Preface Posted

I have decided to post a translated version of the Preface to the Spanish edition of my book A Practical Guide to Bible Software.

I hold the copyright to the book, so I might make other sections available online in due course. To be honest, I haven't made my mind up yet as to whether I'll try to publish it in English or, failing that, post some parts of it online. Either case, it would be a massive task, which would require lots of time (something I'm very short of!). I love writing, and enjoy translating, but I simply hate to translate myself. I really do. Although, come to think of it, it wouldn't be exactly a translation. It would be more like an updated, revised and - for the most part - rewritten kind of book. Make sense?

Anyway, the original Spanish book was published by CLIE back in 2000 as part of the "Seminary Collection", a series of books written for biblical and theological students. The preface was done by the two principals of the United Evangelical Seminary of Theology in Madrid (Spain). I thought it would be nice to give you a little hint of the original work's intent. Hope you enjoy it!

New Article Posted!

Today is a bank holiday here in Spain, and I've managed to finish and post a new article entitled Advantages of Bible Software: Louw-Nida's Lexicon as a Test Case. I hope you find it interesting, and I will very much value your feedback.

I have also streamlined the main menu a bit. I've decided to mark with an asterisk (*) those sections of the website currently unavailable, so that nobody thinks the links are dead or something like that. As I've stated before (and it's been on the FAQ section of BSR for quite some time), these menu items are placeholders. The stuff will be posted as it becomes available, but it is a lot of work, and it takes time...

Update (October 18): As a result of the feedback, I have added a couple of explanatory sidenotes to the article. Hopefully, the Case Study section is much clearer now.

I have posted a new review of Palm Bible+. I want to thank the author, Holger Szesnat, for his valuable contribution to Bible Software Review.

This is the first in a series of reviews of different Palm and PocketPC products. Let me repeat, once again, that your feedback and suggestions are always appreciated.

Bible Software With You

I'm pleased to announce that another review has been posted today. Bible With You and Bible Concordance With You are two of the great applications for Palm and Pocket PC put out by GMPSoft.

I hope you'll enjoy reading the review as much as I have enjoyed using the programs on my PDA. There's only a problem. I still feel somewhat embarassed when I think about taking my handheld to church. I guess I'll overcome it... It's such a blessing!

Maintenance Update

The Companies and User Groups sections of Bible Software Review have been updated. If you have any links that you think should be added, please send them along. The main menu has also been streamlined. There should be less asterisks in the next few weeks :-)

New Article Posted

A couple of months ago, the editor of Religious Product News, a magazine that reaches 30,000 US churches each month, asked me to write a short article on Bible software. I ended up with a general and brief overview of the advantages of using Bible software for studying, teaching, and preaching, coupled with some advice on the key elements that should be kept in mind at the time of purchasing one particular software package.

It is not a deep and comprehensive article, but some of you may find it helpful, so I have posted it here.

UPDATE (April 28): The online edition of Religious Product News now includes the article, which is available in PDF format.

April 30, 2005

Incidentally, the FAQ section of BSR has also been updated.

UPDATE (May 28): Actually, the only review of Zondervan's Scholar's Library I could find online is this one, dating back to November 2003.

QuickVerse Mac Review

I have just posted a new review of QuickVerse Mac. Hope you enjoy reading it.

I had mixed feelings writing the review, and I think this shows. I realize that other reviewers have expressed similar thoughts. So it seems to be a general thing. I've already mentioned that Mac users are a tough crowd to please, haven't I? Well, there is your proof.
